In order to apply for a security guard license you must first take the 8-hour Pre-Assignment Course and pass the exam. This course covers topics such as:

• Legal Powers and Limitations
• Emergency Situations
• Commuincations and Public Relations
• Access Control
• Ethics and Conduct

Fingerprinting is necessary to complete the process of becoming a security guard in New York State. Upon completion you will receive two receipts, one is for your records and one you will need to submit along with your security guard application to mail up to New York State. Applications for the New York State Security Guard License will be available for you to fill out when you attend the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment course. This application, along with your fingerprint reciept and certificate of completion for the 8-Hour Course will all be sent up to the Department of State Division of Licensing Services with a $36 chek or money order.

Once you receive your license it is active for a two year "Registration Period". Throughout that period you must take two 8-Hour Annual In-Service refresher courses. Topics for the In-Service Training Include:

• Legal Powers and Limitations Refresher
• Verbal De-Escalation Techniques
• Body Language Assessment
• Pre-Attack Indicators
• Use of Force
