Getting Your Security License

To obtain a security license in New York, you'll need to complete an 8-hour Pre-Assignment training, get fingerprinted through IdentoGO, and submit the required application and documentation with $36  to the NYS Department of State.

Yes, the Pre-Assignment class can be taken before fingerprinting. However, completing your fingerprinting first can help streamline the licensing process.

On the day of class all you need to bring with you is your New York State Drivers License or ID, your fingerprint receipt if you have it, and a form of payment if you haven't pre-paid.

We can help you schedule your appointment during class, but if you wish to get fingerprints before your class, visit IdentoGO.com, select New York, and follow the instructions to schedule your appointment. You’ll need service code 1545R1 and your county's agency identifier to complete the process.

Costs include $75 for the 8-hour Pre-Assignment training, $101.50 for fingerprinting, and a $36 money order or check payable to the NYS Department of State.

Once you complete the 8-hour course, get your fingerprints, and mail your application, processing typically takes 4-6 weeks.

Maintaining Your Security License

After you get your Security License in the mail, you have 90 days to complete the 16-Hour On-The-Job Training. You also have to take two 8-Hour Annual In-Service trainings before the expiration date on your Security License.

Once you have your license your costs for keeping up with your license are:

16 Hour OJT training $110 within 90 days of getting physical license

8 Hour Annual In-Service $75 yearly, or twice before your expiration date

Renewal application fee $25 payable by personal check or debit card to NYS

You should receive your renewal application from New York State within 90 days of the expiration date on your license. The application has a section for you to update your mailing address (if you moved) which you should fill out so your new license gets mailed to you. In the middle of the form will be a section that shows the dates you took all the required classes for renewal. IF ANY OF THESE DATES ARE MISSING, contact us immediately to get into the next available class. YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED if you mail up the application incomplete.

On the bottom of the form is a section for you to fill in debit or credit card information for the $25 renewal fee. However, you are also allowed to submit a personal check to pay the fee to NYS.

If you haven't received your application within 2 months of your expiration date,  you can contact NYS by sending an email to Licensing@dos.ny.gov with your name and your Security License UID# with your current address. Let them know you haven't gotten your application yet and ask them to mail you out a new one.

If Your License is Expired

If you have ever had a security license in the past and you still have your UID#, you do not need to re-take the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment course again. You just need to get fingerprints done again, fill out the application, and pay the $36 fee to NYS

You have 6 months from the expiration date on your license to submit your application for renewal. However, keep in mind you need to have all the classes done and submit everything to be processed by the state before the 6 month period is up. If you miss the date, you need to get fingerprinted and apply again.

No worries! Give us a call TODAY and we will walk you through the process no matter what step you are on!
